Top-ranked Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini has also withdrawn from the upcoming Miami Masters. Berrettini, ranked at No. 10 in the world, has made only one main draw appearance in Miami throughout his career. The Italian failed to make it past the Miami qualifying event in 2018 but debuted at the event a year later.
Unfortunately for Berrettini, his debut wasn’t impressive as he suffered a first round loss against Hubert Hurkacz. Last year, the Miami Masters was canceled due to COVID-19.
Berrettini hasn’t played since the Australian Open
After leading Italy to the ATP Cup final, Berrettini was hoping for a big Australian Open campaign.
Unfortunately for Berrettini, his Australian Open campaign came to an end on the most unfortunate way as he was forced to give Stefanos Tsitsipas a walkover in their round-of-16 meeting. „I was really feeling well, not just obviously tennis-wise but everything else on my mindset.
The ATP Cup was great. The 1st 3 rounds I was playing really good, so enjoy atmosphere, even though experienced the lockdown, as well. But nothing. It’s just bad luck, yeah,“ Berrettini said at the time. Berrettini beat Karen Khachanov in straight sets in the Australian Open third round but he sounded concerned afterward since he picked up an injury.
„I don’t know what happened. I felt here under my rib something that pulled, but the physio said that nothing was pulled. It could be some muscle that wasn’t working properly, but I was really feeling it when I was serving and obviously my mindset went a little bit away, because I was thinking about it.
I was two sets up, I was playing good, I was feeling the momentum, then all of a sudden I felt this. I am really glad I could win the third set. Now I have to do a great job with my physio to get back on back on court in two days,“ said Berrettini at the time.
